Every prompt and every board has a visibility level. New prompts start as Only me, and nothing ever becomes more visible without you choosing it.

The four levels#

LevelWho can open itListed in feed and search
Only meYou. Also members of an invite-only board you put it in.Never
People I inviteYou and the people you invite. They need to be signed in.Never
Anyone with the linkAnyone who has the link, with or without an account.Never, and search engines are told not to index it
PublicEveryone.Yes: feed, search, tag pages, your profile and search engines

Open Share on a prompt or board. The link it gives you depends on the level:

  • Public: the normal page address, like savemyprompts.net/p/….
  • Anyone with the link: a private link, savemyprompts.net/s/…. If it ends up somewhere you didn't intend, use Reset link. The old link stops working straight away.
  • People I invite: the page address, which asks people to sign in. Only the people you invited get in.
  • Only me: there's no link to share. The share sheet offers “Turn on link sharing”, which switches it to Anyone with the link, but only when you tap it.

The share sheet also has WhatsApp, email, your phone's share menu, a QR code (handy for workshops and slides), Copy as text and Download .md. Those last two never change visibility.

Boards and the prompts in them#

A board has its own visibility. When it differs from a prompt inside it, these rules apply:

  • Invite-only boards work like a shared folder. Members can see every prompt in the board, including your Only me prompts you put there. Those prompts still don't appear in the feed or search. Take a prompt out of the board, or remove a member, and access ends at once.
  • Public and link-only boards never make a prompt public by themselves. If you add an Only me or invite-only prompt to a public board, you're asked to choose: Make it public, or Keep it private. Private items show to you with a lock; visitors don't see them, and the item count they see leaves them out.
  • A link-only board's link opens the prompts in it, the same way a shared folder link does.

Saving versus remixing#

Save puts someone else's prompt on one of your boards as a reference. If the author later makes it private or deletes it, your board shows “No longer available”, and visitors to your board see nothing in its place.

Remix makes your own copy to edit, credited “Remixed from @author”. It starts as Only me. Remixes count on the original only once they're public, and they stay yours whatever happens to the original.

Making something less visible#

Switching a public prompt back to Only me removes it from the feed, search and sitemap within about five minutes. Its stats are kept for you. Public remixes other people already made stay, and their credit line changes to “Remixed from a prompt that's no longer public”.

Copies people made while a prompt was public can't be recalled. That's part of the public prompt licence. Keep personal details out of public prompts; we warn you if we spot email addresses, phone numbers or ID numbers, and we block anything that looks like an API key.
